Knit for Wildlife brings marine species into everyday culture through knitting. When worn and shared, these pieces carry wildlife stories into public spaces. From cafés to bus stops.
Knit for Wildlife uses knitting to bring wildlife stories into everyday life.
On Vega, the relationship between people and eider ducks is built through close attention. Bird tenders learn the rhythms, calls and behaviour of the birds they care for.
The Vega Dialogues Wrap grew from a recorded exchange between bird tender Hildegunn and the eiders. Lucila translated the sound waves of their calls into colour, line and knitted structure.
The pattern is part of the Vega Cohort, a collection of five knitting patterns exploring Vega World Heritage and the decline of Norway’s seabirds through contemporary knitwear.
All patterns in the Vega Cohort are released as free downloads to encourage making, sharing and conversations about seabird conservation.
Knit for Wildlife is endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade for its contribution to ocean literacy through creative, community-based approaches.

About the Designer
Lucila Castaño (Argentina/Canada) is a textile designer whose work explores colour, material and the translation of ideas into form.
For the Knit for Wildlife residency, Lucila created the Vega Dialogues Wrap. The design is based on the sound waves of a real exchange between bird tender Hildegunn and the eider ducks. These rhythms were translated into colour sequences, lines and knitted structure.
The result is a wearable record of a relationship built through care, listening and long familiarity between people and wild birds.
