Knitting Pattern: Eider–Tender Linked Cowl
€0.00
Created by Cheryl Pach through the “Knit for Wildlife” Open Studio. The Eider–Tender Linked Cowl is inspired by the unique relationship between eider ducks and bird tenders in Norway’s Vega Archipelago. Two cowls tell the story. Wear them separately or link them together.
TWO COWLS. ONE CONNECTION: The Eider-Tender Linked Cowl is created by linking two different cowls: the Down Cluster Cowl and the Pair of Hands Cowl. Created by Cheryl Pech through the Knit for Wildlife Open Studio, the design is inspired by the relationship between eider ducks and the bird tenders of Norway’s Vega Archipelago. For generations, bird tenders have cared for wild eiders during the nesting season. They prepare nesting places and protect the birds. Once the eiders and their young have left, the precious down left in the nests can be collected. That relationship between bird and human is at the heart of Cheryl’s design.
DOWN CLUSTER COWL
The Down Cluster Cowl represents the eider side of the story. Its clustered texture draws inspiration from eiderdown and the remarkable material the birds leave behind in their nests.
PAIR OF HANDS COWL
The Pair of Hands Cowl represents the human side of the relationship. Hands become part of the design. A nod to the generations of bird tenders who have cared for the eiders and their nesting places.
TWO COWLS. TWO SIDES OF A RELATIONSHIP. LINKED TOGETHER.
The two cowls come together to create the Eider-Tender Linked Cowl. The linking is more than a construction detail. It brings the two parts of the story together: Eider and tender. Wear them linked. Or wear each cowl on its own.
FROM THE OPEN STUDIO
Cheryl developed the pattern through the Knit for Wildlife Open Studio, exploring the eiders, people and living cultural heritage of the Vega Archipelago. The result is a wearable interpretation of a relationship between people and wild birds that has developed over generations.
