Knitting Pattern: Eider Goes Cousteau

A tiny bird with a rather big story. Pocket Eider Goes Cousteau gives our Pocket Eider an iconic red beanie. A playful nod to ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau. Knit it, clip it to your bag and take the story of Vega’s eiders with you.

A SMALL BIRD WITH A BIG STORY
Around the Vega Archipelago in Norway, people and wild eider ducks have lived alongside each other for generations. Bird tenders build small nesting shelters, protect the ducks during the breeding season and, once the birds have safely left, collect the precious eiderdown from their nests.
Today, the eiders of Vega are in serious decline. Pocket Eider was created to help their story travel beyond the islands – into bags, backpacks, homes and everyday conversations.
MEET THE BEANIE EDITION
For CommOCEAN 2026 in Bergen, our little eider got a new look. Designer Dominika Katwak / @hekla.cwist added a tiny red knitted beanie. A playful nod to ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau and his iconic red cap.
It’s a little piece of pop culture meeting ocean conservation. Small enough to hang from a bag, backpack or keyring, Pocket Eider is designed to take a wildlife story wherever you go.
KNIT IT. CLIP IT ON. TAKE THE STORY WITH YOU.
The pattern is free, quick to knit and made for using up small amounts of yarn. Make one for yourself, pass one on to someone else, or let your Pocket Eider become a tiny conversation starter for seabird conservation.
Pocket Eider is part of an ongoing collaboration between Knit for Wildlife and designer Dominika Katwak / @hekla.cwist, exploring how knitting can carry wildlife stories into everyday life.
