Following our official UN Ocean Decade endorsement, the team at Gen Ocean, the Decade’s official campaign for youth and citizen science engagement, published a dedicated feature article about Knit for Wildlife on their global platform.
The piece, titled “Stitching marine science into everyday life,” explores how our initiative uses knitting to make ocean data tangible. It highlights our core mission: Translating complex marine research into open-access knitting patterns that anyone can use to create and learn.
A New Way to Connect with the Ocean
Gen Ocean dives deep into how we bring scientists, artists, and knitters together through our digital residencies. By moving science communication off the academic page and onto knitting needles, we are turning ocean conservation into a shared, hands-on experience.
Importantly, the article recognizes the dual impact of Knit for Wildlife. It isn’t just about raising awareness for marine species; it’s about the well-being of the knitters themselves. The focused, grounding nature of knitting supports mental health and builds a supportive global community, creating a true space for people and wildlife to co-flourish.
Seeing our vision recognized and shared by Gen Ocean is incredibly validating. It proves that creative, community-driven solutions have a vital role to play in the future of ocean health.
