We have some incredible news to share before our official launch: Knit for Wildlife has been officially endorsed as an action under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development!
To see our work recognized on a global scientific stage is incredibly humbling. It proves that the scientific community sees the exact same value we do in connecting people and wildlife through knitting.
From Research to the Knitting Needles
Traditional science communication often stays locked inside research papers. Knit for Wildlife changes that by translating complex ecological insights into open-access knitting patterns. By transforming hard scientific data into tangible, wearable pieces, we are bringing wildlife literacy straight into everyday conversations.
This initiative is built on a “co-flourish” mindset. Knitting doesn’t just help us talk about marine conservation—the rhythmic act of knitting itself supports our mental health and well-being, while knitting together in groups builds the community and empathy needed to protect our oceans.
From Mozambique to Northern Norway
This official recognition follows our successful pilot project with Love the Oceans in Mozambique, where we saw firsthand how knitting can bridge geography and culture to carry vital ocean stories.
Looking ahead, our current 2026 focus takes us to the UNESCO World Heritage archipelago of Vegaøyan in Northern Norway. Our knitters-in-residence are currently collaborating with local eider tenders and scientists to learn about seabird decline, transforming those coastal stories into new knitting patterns and community events.
Thank You to Our Flokk
This endorsement belongs to every single knitter who has brought their passion, yarn, and energy to this project. We are just getting started.
