Knit for Wildlife uses knitting to bring wildlife stories into everyday life.
Norway’s seabirds are disappearing. Changes in food availability, climate and marine ecosystems are placing growing pressure on birds that depend on the ocean to survive.
The eider duck is part of this wider story. Once a familiar presence along much of the Norwegian coast, its decline is a reminder that even species woven deeply into coastal culture cannot be taken for granted.
The Eider Duck Tee brings that story into an everyday garment. The pattern is part of the Vega Cohort, a collection of five knitting patterns exploring Vega World Heritage and seabird decline through contemporary knitwear.
All patterns in the Vega Cohort are released as free downloads to encourage making, sharing and conversations about seabird conservation.
Knit for Wildlife is endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade for its contribution to ocean literacy through creative, community-based approaches.

About the Designer
Isabel Vique (Spain/UK) is a conservation biologist and knitter whose career has focused on wildlife and biodiversity conservation.
For the Knit for Wildlife residency, Isabel created the Eider Duck Tee. The garment translates the form and colouring of the eider duck into a simple, wearable design. Dark sleeves reference the bird’s wings, while the pale body draws from its distinctive plumage.
The result is deliberately recognisable without becoming a literal image of the bird. A piece of conservation storytelling designed to be worn in everyday life.
