Knitting Pattern: Vega Gansey

Knit for Wildlife uses knitting to bring wildlife stories into everyday life.

Knitting has long been part of life in coastal communities. Garments were made to be useful. They carried knowledge of materials, weather and place from one generation to the next.

The Vega Gansey looks at this tradition through a contemporary lens. Inspired by coastal knitwear and the cultural landscape of Vega, the design explores how heritage can remain alive rather than fixed in the past.

The pattern is part of the Vega Cohort, a collection of five knitting patterns exploring Vega World Heritage and the decline of Norway’s seabirds through contemporary knitwear.

All patterns in the Vega Cohort are released as free downloads to encourage making, sharing and conversations about seabird conservation.

Knit for Wildlife is endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade for its contribution to ocean literacy through creative, community-based approaches.

About the Designer

Jean Long (Ireland) is a knitwear designer, maker and teacher whose work is rooted in traditional knitting and the cultural histories carried through cloth.

For the Knit for Wildlife residency, Jean created the Vega Gansey. Drawing on the language of traditional ganseys, she developed a contemporary garment shaped by the Vega story. Texture and structure connect coastal knitting heritage with the eider duck tradition and the people who have cared for the birds for generations.
